Gimbals can be the perfect tool for achieving smooth controlled shots, even during intensely shaky and fast-moving situations like running, or when filming from a vehicle. Choosing the correct gimbal for a production can sometimes be a little confusing, so below we have compiled the key features of our most popular gimbals:

DJI RONIN-S

RONIN-S

The DJI Ronin-S is a compact handheld gimbal designed for use by a single operator. With a maximum payload capacity of 3.6kg, it is ideal for use with not only DSLR and mirrorless cameras, but it can also be used with some stripped down mid-size cameras including the Sony PXW-FS5. Manual focus is an option using the built-in wheel, but only when using lenses with built-in electronic focus, such as the Canon L series lenses, and a compatible camera. The Ronin-S has an internal battery built-in to the handle. If properly utilised, the internal battery can last for up to 12 hours, however Procam Take 2 also includes a portable charger as part of the package for longer shoots.

ZHIYUN-TECH CRANE V2

ZHIYUN TECH

The Zhiyun-Tech Crane V2 is a similar alternative to the DJI Ronin-S but with only half the maximum payload. This gimbal can hold cameras up to 1.8kg, which is still ideal for DSLR and mirrorless cameras like the Sony A7S Mkii or Panasonic Lumix GH5-S. The unit weighs 1.2kg, making it the lighter option when compared to the Ronin-S, which weighs 1.6kg. The CMF-01 Servo Follow Focus allows the operator to manually pull focus on a wide variety of lenses. The Procam Take 2 package includes a Zhiyun-Tech Dual Handle, which gives the user the option to operate the Crane 2 with both hands.

DJI RONIN 2

RONIN 2

A 3-Axis carbon fibre gimbal with a maximum payload of 13.6kg and weighing only 6.4kg, the DJI Ronin 2 is a versatile gimbal that can be used handheld, mounted to cars, cranes and even drones. It can be used in several different operator configurations, from single operator to three-person operation - one person holding, one person operating tilt and pan using a separate wireless controller and one person pulling focus. The high payload of the Ronin 2 means it can hold a larger range of camera and lens configurations; as an example, it can comfortably stabilise an ARRI Alexa Mini with Zeiss Superspeed Prime Lens, a lightweight matte box, filters and a wireless follow focus.

FREEFLY SYSTEMS MOVI PRO

MOVI PRO

The Freefly MoVI Pro is very similar to the Ronin 2 with its carbon fibre design, versatility of use and mounting options, but with a maximum payload of 6.8kg the MoVI Pro can only handle half the weight of its counterpart. However, the MoVI gimbal itself weighs in at only 2.65kg, making it a lot easier on the arms compared to the Ronin 2 when operating handheld. A clever extra with the MoVI Pro comes in the form of the MIMIC, a wireless handheld controller that you move kinetically. The MoVI Pro follows each precise movement of the MIMIC Controller, allowing for organic and fluid movement.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE WHEN HIRING GIMBALS

  • When hiring a gimbal it is important to test the exact camera set-up prior to the hire. The shape or length of the camera body, lenses, matte box and other accessories can all affect compatibility, even if the total weight is less than the gimbal payload, so you may need to change the gimbal, or camera set-up to make it work. Please let your account manager know exactly which camera, lenses and accessories you plan to use on the gimbal in advance of the prep, and where possible they will arrange for a technician to test each set-up prior to your hire.
  • On productions with a tight schedule where the operator might need to switch between static shots and gimbal shots quickly, having a second camera is advised. Preparing a gimbal often requires certain accessories to be stripped off the camera body before it can be balanced by the operator, which can take some time and will need to be factored into the schedule. Having one camera for static shots and one camera pre-rigged for gimbal shots allows for quick changes.
