A New Cinematic Multicam Workflow for Later… With Jools Holland

Thursday 11th August 2022
Filming Later with Jools Holland

Procam Take 2 is proud to have supported the filming of Later… With Jools Holland as it returned for series 60 on 14th May 2022.

In a reimagined format, performances were recorded at the restored Alexandra Palace Theatre using ARRI Multicam for a stunning cinematic look. After seeing examples of previous work, BBC Studios enlisted Procam Take 2’s projects team to support the integration of cine cameras into a broadcast workflow that was familiar to the production.

The opportunity to help transition ‘Later … with Jools Holland’ from a traditional broadcast camera system to the ARRI Cine Multicam workflow was hugely exciting,” said Dan Studley, Technical Director at Procam Take 2. “PT2 Projects has spent many years working on our cine and broadcast integration so that the move from camera channels to large sensor filming, including full lens and iris control with tallies, was seamless. From creating the fibre infrastructure for the camera systems, to building on-site technical and production galleries, the team were proud to help realise the visual ambition of such an iconic show, with a brilliantly creative production and camera team."

A total of seven ARRI cameras were prepped, delivered and rigged for the first block, increasing to eight for the final. A combination of ARRI Alexa Minis and Amiras were selected and paired with Angénieux Optimo Ultra 12x FF 36-435mm and Canon Cine 17-120mm zoom lenses, one Angénieux 24-290mm and a Tokina 11-20mm for the remote dolly.

Filming took place across three blocks, comprising one rig day and two filming days. Cabling was installed at the venue for the duration of the shoot to minimise rigging and de-rigging time between each block.

All cameras were fed into PT2’s OB2, an engineering vehicle designed to house the technical equipment and crew for the record. “Due to the vast layout of Alexandra Palace, the production team wanted to base themselves inside the venue at the edge of action,“ continues Dan Studley. “OB2 gave the Jools Holland team the advantage of a fly-away production gallery next to the stage, whilst benefiting from the quick deployment and versatility of an OB vehicle.

Ensuring everything ran smoothly behind the scenes, PT2 provided a Technical Unit Manager, Camera Manager, two ACs, a Data Wrangler, Comms Engineer and Comms Trainee, Vision Engineer and RF Engineer.

Later...with Jools Holland series 60 aired on BBC 2 from 14th May 2022. Featured artists included Wet Leg, Liam Gallagher, Jessie Buckley, Paolo Nutini, Florence + The Machine, and more.
