Procam is proud to have supported the filming of the stunning and innovative Glass Animals – Dreamland music video, which was filmed in its entirety by the band’s frontman Dave Bayley during lockdown, with help from a remote creative team.
Production company Pulse Films reached out to Procam to outline the plan and book the equipment. The concept was ‘a music video delivered like an Ikea box… some assembly required’. The production team and DOP put together a 50-page manual including step-by-step instructions and diagrams for Dave so he could assemble the set, props, camera, and lighting equipment himself. Each box of equipment delivered by Procam was clearly labelled to make the DIY rigging easier.
The video was filmed using an ARRI Alexa Mini with a Fujinon 19-90mm Lens. The idea was that Dave would sit on a dolly with the camera in-front and the whole dolly unit would be pulled from one end of the set to the other. To achieve this a Procam technician liaised with DOP Ruben Woodin Deschamps, and completed tests at the Procam warehouse to find a solution that could achieve this, settling on a bespoke rig of two Egripment Focus dollies strapped together - one for the camera, and the other with an apple box for the artist to sit on. Once Dave rigged the same set-up in his apartment, he used a drill to pull the whole unit (and himself) across the set. The set was lit using two Litepanels Gemini 2x1, eight Dedos, an ARRI 650w and an ARRI 2K. An Aladdin Bi-Flex 1 with soft box was rigged onto the dolly behind the camera as a soft key light, alongside a projector which displayed dream-like images onto the backdrop.
The result of this creative and experimental way of producing a music video remotely is a visually pleasing and enchanting, professionally filmed piece. The second half of the video reveals exactly how everything was put together and filmed in isolation, with Dave loading and rigging all of the equipment into his apartment solo and following the step-by-step instructions from the 50-page manual.
The single is the title track from the latest Glass Animals album ‘Dreamland’, which is currently available for pre-order. Watch the full video below.
