ATEM Constellation 8K features a compact 2RU rack mount design with a built in control panel. This allows operation of the switcher, critical during setup or for emergency use. Also included is a large LCD so you can see program output and change switcher settings via on screen menus. Although only 2RU size, the rear of the switcher has a massive 40 x 12G‑SDI inputs, 24 x 12G‑SDI aux outputs, plus balanced audio, Ethernet, RS‑422 control and MADI digital audio extra inputs to the internal Fairlight audio mixer. 40 Standard Converted 12G‑SDI Inputs
You get 40 independent 12G-SDI inputs, with each input featuring its own dedicated up and cross converter. That means it's possible to convert 1080p and Ultra HD sources to stunning 8K to use them in your 8K programs! When used in HD or Ultra HD, you can connect up to 40 different sources in all formats up to 2160p60. When running 8K formats, you can connect up to 10 Quad Link 12G‑SDI 8K sources in all formats up to 4320p60! You can even loop out audio channels 1, 2, 3 and 4 from SDI inputs 1 to 30 to the two MADI digital audio outputs, so you can hand off the audio from all your sources to an external audio engineer for mixing.
24 Customizable 12G‑SDI Outputs
ATEM Constellation 8K features 24 independently routable 12G‑SDI outputs that can be fully customized. All of these outputs are similar to aux outputs, however they're more powerful because you can route any external SDI input and all internal sources to any of these 12G‑SDI outputs. That’s flexible enough to run independent program feeds, clean feeds, or outputs for on stage projectors and video walls. It’s like having multiple switchers all running at the same time with everyone getting the custom feed they need. All 12G‑SDI outputs contain embedded program audio, plus you get mix minus support, RP‑188 embedded timecode, SDI camera control, tally and talkback.
Choose from Hardware or Software Control Panels
All ATEM switchers feature a wide range of hardware and software control options, plus it’s possible to share control panels between all ATEM models for different live events. Included with ATEM Constellation is a full software based control panel for Mac and Windows. The software connects to the switcher via ethernet and you can control the switcher, upload media, mix audio and control cameras. You can even run multiple copies of the software switcher at the same time! Then, when you need more power, you can add an ATEM Advanced Panel for switching or even an ATEM Camera Control Panel allowing dedicated control of your cameras. Includes 8K Multiview with Labels, Tally and Meters
The built in multi views let you monitor multiple sources in a single monitor. You get 4 independent multiview outputs that can each be individually customized or transformed into a single full resolution 8K multiview when you switch to 8K. You get the stunning quality that only an 8K multiview can provide. Plus all external inputs and all internal sources can be routed to any view. Plus each multiview can be independently set to 4, 7, 10, 13 or 16 simultaneous views. Each view also has on screen status including a custom label, VU meters and tally. The four 12G‑SDI multiview outputs support HD and Ultra HD up to 2160p60, and up to 4320p60 via Quad Link 12G‑SDI when switched to 8K.

ATEM Constellation 8K includes a wide range of broadcast quality 8K native transitions such as mix, dip, wipe, and more. All transitions can be customized by adjusting parameters such as their duration, border color, border width, position and direction. Transitions are even fully 8K native. You also get exciting DVE transitions, perfect for graphic wipes and even stingers when used with the internal media players! To eliminate errors, ATEM Constellation also includes a preview transition feature so you can check your transitions before putting them to air.
Full Resolution 8K DVE
ATEM Constellation features 4 independent Ultra HD DVEs that all work together as a single full resolution 8K DVE when you switch to 8K formats. You get amazing quality and the DVE supports position, resize and scale, all in real time. The DVE lets you create professional picture in picture effects with customizable 3D borders, shadows and lighting. DVEs can also be used to create amazing DVE transitions with squeeze, push and swoosh effects for adding excitement to your programming. You can even combine DVE transitions with custom graphics to create your own graphic wipe transitions!
Professional Broadcast Talkback
To keep crews working as a single creative team, ATEM Constellation features built in talkback. Talkback supports a front 5 pin XLR headset connector, as well as a rear RJ12 talkback expansion connector for interfacing with industry standard systems such as ClearCom or RTS. You get full talkback control including program and engineering loops, sidetone control for hearing the headset mic into the headphones and program mix. ATEM Constellation also supports SDI talkback that uses SDI channels 15 and 16 for 2‑way communication with Blackmagic Design cameras. You can even use channels 13 and 14 for engineering talkback. It’s even possible to mix the talkback mic into the program audio for voiceovers!
Internal Media for Stills and Motion Graphics
The built in media pool stores broadcast quality RGBA graphics and animations that can be played back instantly by the two media players. Media players simply appear as additional input sources on the ATEM Constellation 8K, so you don’t have to use extra SDI inputs for graphics. For the highest quality, the media pool can hold up to 24 full resolution 8K stills, or 64 Ultra HD or HD stills. Motion graphics clips for use in animations and stingers can be up to 100 8K RGBA frames, 400 frames in Ultra HD or a massive 1,600 frames in 1080HD. You can easily manage all of your media using the included ATEM Software Control or download directly from Photoshop using the ATEM Photoshop plug‑in.
Includes New ATEM Advanced Chroma Key in 8K
For news or virtual set work, ATEM Constellation is the perfect choice as it features 16 ATEM Advanced Keyers for high quality chroma or luminance keying! The chroma keyer is incredibly powerful and features a colour picker to sample background colours for automatic generation of the key parameters. You get precise controls for edge and flare, and there is even a foreground colour corrector so you can match the "look" of the foreground layer to the background layer making seamless compositions possible. The keyer can also be used for pattern and DVE keying allowing incredible versatility. Then when you switch to 8K, you still get four independent full resolution 8K ATEM Advanced Keyers!
Multi Rate 12G-SDI for HD, Ultra HD and Native 8K
With 40 multi rate 12G‑SDI input connections, ATEM Constellation 8K is compatible with HD, Ultra HD and 8K SDI sources. When working in HD, it's easy to operate at high frame rates up to 720p60, 1080p60 and 1080i59.94 formats. When you switch to Ultra HD, you can work in 2160p formats up to 60 frames per second all using a single 12G‑SDI connection. When switched to 8K it’s now possible to operate in 4320p formats up to 60p using Quad Link 12G‑SDI which allows real time 8K using 4 BNC cables. Only multi rate 12G‑SDI allows switching between HD, Ultra HD and 8K formats so you can instantly adapt to the needs of the job you are doing anywhere in the world!

All SDI inputs are connected to a built in Fairlight audio mixer that features 6 band parametric EQ, compressor, limiter, noise gate and expander on each input. Professional Fairlight Audio Mixer
With a built in Fairlight audio mixer, the ATEM Constellation makes it possible to do extremely complex live sound mixing. The internal mixer features a massive 156 channels, for the biggest audio mixer in a live production switcher! 80 mixer channels are de‑embedded from the SDI inputs, while an extra 64 audio channels are input via MADI in. Each input channel features the highest quality 6 band parametric EQ and compressor, limiter, expander and noise gate as well as full panning. You get extra channels for the analog input, talkback microphone and media players. All this audio power can be controlled via the ATEM Software Control, a Mackie compatible panel or Fairlight Audio Console.
Includes Free Software Control Panel
The ATEM Software Control Panel gives you total control over your switcher and is included free. ATEM Software Control Panel features a beautifully designed interface with a visual switcher and parameter palettes for making quick adjustments. Multiple users can connect to the switcher via Ethernet and all work on different parts of the event at the same time! The ATEM Software Control also lets you access camera control, audio mixing, media, macro programming and even control of HyperDeck disk recorders. You can even save the full state of the switcher as XML files, plus all media is backed up from the media pool. Plus you can run the software on Mac or Windows.
Add the Speed and Power of an ATEM Hardware Panel
All ATEM switchers have a wide range of control panels allowing customization for the kind of work you do. ATEM hardware control panels feature a fast program/preview style which is the industry standard for switcher control. All transitions have direct access buttons and a t‑bar is included when performing manual blending of transitions. For accurate control of the DVE, a joystick provides X, Y positioning and rotate for DVE zoom. Then you can use the LCD menus to control features that don't have dedicated knobs and buttons. You can even setup and trigger Macros right from the panel! The ATEM panels feature internal power supplies as well as an IEC AC power connection.
Massive Next Generation Switcher
The ATEM Constellation 8K has been designed as a next generation switcher with both new technologies and a large number of features for handling the latest and most complex work. The massive feature set includes 40 inputs, 24 outputs, plus lots of DVEs, advanced keyers and multiviews, all in a design that's still fast and easy to use. A great example is the front control panel, which has been specifically designed to operate in a similar way to an ATEM Television Studio switcher. This ensures ATEM Constellation 8K is an easy upgrade as it will feel very familiar. Plus because you get 4 times as many features, they can all be combined to operate at 4 times the resolution allowing you to work in 8K.
Full Front Panel Switcher Control
On the front panel, the large keypad allows selecting any of the 40 inputs plus these buttons are the same type as used on the professional control panels. Switching from the front panel is easy as you just select a source, then select cut or auto. There's even an alternative cut-bus mode for instant switching when pressing a button. Plus there are buttons for enabling key and media players. The full switcher features are available via the LCD where you can scroll the menus and operate the entire switcher! Of course the natural way to operate the switcher is using an external panel or the free software, but the front panel is great for emergencies, during setup and for smaller AV style jobs.
Includes Built-In Talkback
The advanced design also includes professional talkback and because the switcher communicates via the SDI camera feed combined with the SDI program return feed, you don't need to run extra cables just for talkback. Program talkback is sent to and from the camera on the unused SDI audio channels 15 and 16, or channels 13 and 14 for separate engineering talkback com loops. The front panel has an industry standard 5 pin broadcast headset connector plus buttons to enable talkback communication. Then for large broadcast jobs, the rear panel includes an RJ12 expansion connector so you can connect to industry standard talkback systems such as ClearCom or RTS.
Super Bright LCD for Monitoring and Setup
On the right side of the front panel there's a large 5 inch screen and menu buttons as well as a scroll knob for setting menus. The large screen also shows the current program output, audio level meters and the input label at the top of the screen is the current selected audio channel, which will indicate what audio source will be adjusted when turning the knob. The audio meters are true VU meters and feature the correct ballistics and colours so they conform to the VU audio meter specification. You can use the menus to operate the switcher, but these menus are also where you can change the switcher settings, such as television standard, multiview settings and network IP address.
Professional 12G-SDI Connections
On the rear panel you see an array of 40 12G‑SDI inputs on the left and 24 12G‑SDI outputs on the right. These connectors are then combined into vertical groups of 4 when running in 8K as 8K uses Quad Link 12G‑SDI. There are also 4 Ultra HD multiview outputs. The BNC connectors are a custom Blackmagic Design part, engineered to allow longer cable lengths and increased reliability. One of the problems when starting 8K production is that not all your sources will be in 8K. That's ok, as each of the Quad Link 12G‑SDI inputs will also allow a single link Ultra HD or HD input to be up and cross converted for use.
Massive 156 Channel Fairlight Audio Mixer
One of the unique features of the ATEM Constellation 8K is its very large Fairlight audio mixer. This big mixer has been included because it’s the switcher operator who gets all the video sources and along with that, the audio sources too. A big internal mixer makes it easy to work with all the switcher audio sources directly. The Fairlight audio mixer has all 40 inputs, plus the 2 ch analog inputs, the audio from the media players, audio from the talkback mix and 32 stereo channels from the MADI input. That's a big mixer with full access to all audio! Each input even has 6 band parametric EQ, compressor, limiter, noise gate and more. You can even connect to a Fairlight console.
Remote Control for Custom Solutions
The rear panel ethernet connection supports the ATEM switcher protocol for fast low latency switching. All the ATEM control panels and the free ATEM Software Control use this protocol and you can plug in the panels direct to the switcher so you don't need a network switch. However because it’s ethernet, you can plug into your network and control the ATEM remotely, even from overseas! Ethernet allows you to add as many panels as you like all at the same time, or custom solutions using the developer SDK. Many broadcast automation systems use serial control because it's simple and fast. ATEM Constellation 8K includes an RS‑422 connection and the protocol is documented in the instruction manual.
Innovative and Quiet Thermal System
ATEM Constellation 8K features an innovative cooling system that keeps the design small at only 2 rack units, so it can also remain portable. The 3 fans allow enough extra cooling capacity that they can reduce speed and run slow. This reduces fan noise and reduces fatigue. The internal heatsinks have also been custom designed so air flow is directed over components and airflow turbulence is reduced to further assist in keeping the noise down. All the air ducts and heat sinks have been custom designed specifically for ATEM Constellation 8K so the cooling system can be perfectly matched to this large switcher design.
Redundant International Power Supplies
The ATEM Constellation 8K features 2 power supplies and each power supply can operate the switcher by itself so 2 power supplies mean you get 100% redundancy. Each power supply even has a separate independent AC connector on the rear panel, so this means it’s possible to power the switcher from 2 different AC sources. If an AC source goes down, you still won't get a power interruption. This is extremely useful where one AC connection can be a different power phase, a generator or a UPS. The power supplies will automatically adapt to various voltages from 100V to 240V so the switcher can travel the world with you and continue to operate perfectly.

The cut transition is the most simple and widely used of all transitions and you will use it continuously! When you press the cut button, ATEM instantly changes from current program source to the preview source precisely at the moment you hit the button. Cuts can be performed by directly selecting sources on the program bus or more commonly by pressing the cut button to transition to the next source lined up on the preview bus. Cut is easily the most popular transition!
One of the most elegant transitions in live production is the dissolve or mix transition. Gradually transitioning from one source to the next by creating a smooth blend between the sources brings out the emotion in your production. You can simply press the auto transition button to automatically trigger a mix between shots at a pre‑set transition rate. You can use the t-bar to manually blend the transition for the perfect live mix.
Similar to mix transitions, a dip transition is a gradual blend from source to source however, the transition dips to an intermediate third source before completing the transition to the next shot. You can choose to dip to any colour, a graphic from the media players or even a live video source. Use black or white for the intermediate source for incredible creativity! For sponsored live productions like sports events, use dip transitions to flash up a sponsor's logos during the broadcast!
ATEM Production switchers have 18 built in wipe patterns, which let you create over 100 different styles of wipe transitions! You can use circles, diamonds, squares and more to transition from one source to another as you gradually expand the shape to reveal the next source. Patterns can be inverted, softened or have customized coloured borders. You can also insert live video into borders creating wipe pattern transitions that include three live video streams at the same time!
ATEM Constellation 8K has 4 DVEs in HD and Ultra HD, or a single DVE in 8K. You can push or squeeze your live video from one camera to the next with incredible built in DVE transitions. DVE transitions can be flip flopped and reversed giving you even more transition options. You get over 19 exciting DVE pre-programmed moves to choose from. Using the DVE for transitions will increase the production value on any live production!
When you want to combine sponsor logos with transitions during a live production, graphic transitions are the perfect solution! Use the DVE to create amazing flying graphic effects and logo wipe transitions. You can create high resolution logos in Photoshop CC using the included plug‑in to load directly into the ATEM media pool. Photoshop CC graphics with pre-multiplied keys are perfect for smooth flying logos in the highest quality, as your logo moves across the screen, the shot transitions with a hidden wipe under the flying graphic!
You can create exciting eye popping Stinger transitions by combining live video with animated graphics and sound effects. When you trigger a Stinger, your animation is instantly played back from a media player and keys over the live video as it wipes to the next shot. You also get simultaneously mixed sound effects with the live program output. Stingers are widely used for live sports broadcasts as great transitions to instant replays and back to the live action!
Upstream Keyers - Amazing Multi Layer Live Action
All ATEM live production switchers include powerful upstream keying for amazing broadcast effects! Layer live video, titles, graphics and animation over live video or graphic backgrounds with incredible quality using chroma, luma, linear and pattern keying. The ATEM Constellation 8K has 4 advanced keyers for each M/E! That’s a massive 16 independent chroma keyers which means you can create mind blowing broadcast quality multi layer effects for your production.
Luma keys are sometimes known as a self key because the same video source is used for cutting the key and overlaying the video image. You can do this with live video from a camera, prerecorded video from a HyperDeck or graphics loaded in the media pool. Luma keys work the best with high contrast images like white elements on a black background, so that you can use the contrast to cut the black background and replace it with live video or broadcast graphics.
Get incredibly clean, high quality results with Linear keying by using two separate sources for the fill and the key to create one video image! The fill signal contains video to be stacked over the background, while the key signal contains a grayscale mask to cut out or mask the area to be filled. Fill and key signals can be graphics from the media pool, live motion video, or video and key from an external character generator or graphics system.
Used every day for TV weather forecasts, chroma keys are a very powerful way of combining live images together in real time, cleanly in high quality! The presenter stands in front of typically a green or blue background, and the chroma keyer will remove only that colour and combine it with another image such as a pre-recorded video or graphic. ATEM Switchers include multiple keyers so you can simultaneously combine multiple live, pre-recorded, graphic and chroma key elements in real time.
Create amazing transitions with the pattern key! You can use any one of the 18 built in wipe patterns to combine live images or graphics with geometric shapes. The pattern keyer gives you full pattern control including softness, symmetry, size and position completely independent of the transition block. That means you can use pattern keys to create picture in picture effects that can be transitioned to as easily as any live camera source, and you don't need to tie up your DVE!
Downstream Keyers - Add Bugs, Logos and Lower Thirds
ATEM Constellation 8K features 4 downstream keyers so you can insert high quality graphics like logos, bugs and titles over the live 'on air' program output. Downstream keyers are the last layers of keying so they overlay all video switched to the main program. You can also easily bypass the downstream keyers by using the clean feed aux outputs. This means you can record the clean feed as your master and use the downstream keyers for overlays that you only want on air.
DVE - More, Resize, Scale and Rotate Live Video Instantly
Perfect for live breaking news production, the DVE lets you create live crosses from the studio to the excitement on location. Create picture in picture effects with both the studio host and location reporter combined as one video output. The high quality DVE gives you control of size, position, and features 3D borders, drop shadows and lighting! Unlike traditional CCU controllers, which have to be installed into a desk, the ATEM Camera Control Panel has been designed to be portable so it can simply be placed on any desktop or bolted down so it can be mounted in a slide out rack shelf. The controls are arranged in a familiar and logical layout, making it perfect for both experienced and new operators. Plus, it works with all ATEM switcher models.
